How Modern Cloth Nappies Work
Modern Cloth Nappies have a similar layout to disposable nappies. That’s about where the similarities end. Re-usable cloth nappies are made of soft comfortable fabrics that are gentle on the skin, machine washable and eco-friendly. There are a few different styles; here is a quick run down:
Fitted Nappy
These usually have several layers of absorbent material and do up with either snaps or velcro. Some fitted nappies will also have a stay-dry layer (usually microfleece of suede cloth) which will sit next to babys skin to draw moisture away. Fitted Nappies will require a seperate water proof cover such as our Baby BeeHinds PUL covers or Wool Covers.
AIO – All In One
These are just as they are described, an All-In-One – no separate cover or insert. These have a water proof outer layer, absorbent material on the inside and stay-dry layer next to babys skin and do up with either snaps or velcro.
Pocket Nappy
These also have a water proof outer layer, and then a stay-dry layer next to babys skin with an opening at the back of the nappy for an absorbent insert to be “stuffed” inside, hence the name pocket nappy. These do up with either snaps or velcro.
PUL Covers
PUL Covers are made of breathable polyurethane laminate which is usually sandwiched between two layers of polyester knit. These covers provide protection from wetness and are worn either over fitted nappies or over a prefold and do up with either snaps or velcro.
Wool Covers
Wool covers provide excellent protection – highly breathable, they provide warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Urine wicks from the nappy to the wool which neutralizes the ammonia in urine. Wool can absorb up to 40% of its own weight in wetness without feeling wet.
